No spoilers here. I successfully managed expectations and I was blown away by J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek. I have never seen a single episode of Star Trek. I have never seen a Star Trek film. What happened was that I saw a movie produced by the people responsible for LOST. To add to my enjoyment, Michael Giacchino’s score helped a bit too.
The film has an ethnically diverse cast that brought veracity to their roles. John Cho kicked butt as Sulu. Simon Pegg brought a few laughs as Scotty. Zachary Quinto as Spock was a breath of fresh air because I was getting used to seeing him as Sylar from HEROES. Props to Chris Pine for his portrayal of James T. Kirk.
I won’t give anything away. So I will just say that I think the film stayed true to its original fanbase by not ignoring the franchise’s history and canon. The reboot is both a sequel and a prequel film. The film also welcomed a new generation of potential Trekkies just meeting Star Trek for the first time. I am quite pleased that the film was not corny and not filled with sci-fi jargon. It’s a shame that anybody who could get into Star Trek will refrain to do so because of its association with nerds and geeks. Let’s hope that this version of Star Trek breaks down those barriers.
Bottomline, 4.5 stars out of 5. Star Trek does to its franchise what Batman Begins and Casino Royale did to their’s.
